Champion Dog Trials 2006
The Dog Handlers Association Dog trials took place at Port Howard on 26th August.
14 dogs actually ran on the day. As usual the sheep proved to not be as hospitable as the people of Port Howard and although we have seen worse they left a bit to be desired and thus contributed to 5 of the 14 dogs being called off part way through their runs. All dogs got the sheep, there were several crossovers and only 3 or 4 really good outruns on the day and nobody penned the sheep.
Although Les was suffering somewhat Saturday morning and had several trips back to the settlement to settle his stomach and the confidence wasn’t flowing from him quite as much as it was the night before he proved that it is quality not quantity that counts, running just one dog he wiped the board with Duel. Having said that Turtle made the decision to come to the dog trials an hour before kick off and he brought 3 dogs and went home with 3 prizes. Fortunately we didn’t have to listen to him for the rest of the evening as he went home to Hill Cove (after he found his land rover keys!)
Paul Peck was 4th with Bet. He also went on to win the darts competition later in the evening. Katie Bonner won the ladies competition and this may well be the first win of many for Katie as she appears to have the Bonner talent for playing darts.
Numbers of people may be reducing on the West but it seems we can all still manage to have a good time and I think it can be said that it was a very successful two nighter and dog trails. Thanks to the Port Howard people once again for hosting the event.
Results from trials as follows:
1st Les Morrison & Duel with 34 ½ points lost
2nd Tony Hirtle & Twig (on steroids) with 37 points lost
3rd Tony Hirtle & Quill with 39 ½ points lost
4th Paul Peck with & Bet with 49 points lost
5th Tony Hirtle & Kylie with 50 points lost
Champion Dog Trials Held at Hill Cove on 9th September.
Once again our dwindling West population showed they know how to party, this was backed up by some very rough looking customers turning up to view and take part in the dog trials at 9.30 on Saturday morning.
Saturday morning proved to be rather cold, Gilberto Castro was first to run his dog Mac, both having just stepped off the Islander shortly before having to step up and show the other handlers how it is done. Gilberto had only just arrived back to the Falklands so his dog hadn’t seen him for 5 weeks but this didn’t prove a problem; Mac put on a good run and proceeded to pen the sheep, this setting the standard of the day that was to just get better and better!
Second dog out was Oscar Velasquez with Ronaldo, Ronaldo did some fine work and had everything done and dusted and the sheep penned in the 12 minutes. At this stage things were looking good for Oscar.
Next up was Steven Dickson with Dae, this little bitch is very young and won the trials at DHS. She did some really good work but was slow to get moved on at the circle so Steven ran out of time before he got to the pen.
Next out was Paul Peck with Bet who did a very good run and had the sheep penned in well under 12 minutes. Paul was given lots of good advice from his fellow West competitors.
Fifth out was Susan Hirtle with Liz. Susan was suffering badly from nerves but calm was soon restored as Liz put on an extremely good show and had fellow competitors (especially her husband) extremely worried. Again Liz penned the sheep with some very good work.
Tony then had to get out there and do his bit, he went out looking quite anxious & worked hard and Kylie pulled out all the stops and completed her run and penned the sheep in good time, handler came back looking very happy and gibberish as was to be his stance for the rest of the evening!
This put Les under even more pressure, once he got out there on the course they pulled out all the stops and apart from not having a lift he did a perfect run and very neat and steady penning.
Oscar Velasques then ran Queen to round off the days events. Queen complete her run by penning the sheep. Thus seven of the eight dogs penned the sheep on the day, this is quite a rare event and credit goes to Susan and Tony who did an excellent job with the dog trail course and in training the sheep.
The judges job is not a easy one on most occasions and it must have been very difficult to pick out a winner on the day as certainly the top 4 or 5 dogs were very close. The judges were Bobby Short (head judge), Bill Pole-Evans and Justin Knight and timekeeper was James McGhie.
Governor Huckle presented the prizes (donated by FIC) to the worthy winners who were:
Joint First: Tony Hirtle with Kylie and Les Morrison with Jewel they each lost 18 points but Tony and Kylie came out overall winners when the outrun, lift and fetch were taken into consideration (somehow I don’t think we will forget who won for some time to come!)
Susan Hirtle with Liz was third with 24 points lost and Paul Peck with Bet was 4th with 32 points lost.
